Clinical supervision for admitted patients

When is inpatient care needed?

Most people with mental health problems are treated as outpatients. A psychiatrist may recommend a stay at the centre when:

  • Severe depression comes with thoughts of self-harm, or a person has stopped eating, sleeping or functioning
  • Mania or psychosis makes it unsafe to stay at home, or the person cannot follow treatment there
  • Alcohol or drug withdrawal needs medical supervision (detox)
  • Several outpatient treatments have not worked and closer observation is needed to adjust medication
  • The home environment makes recovery very hard, for example constant access to alcohol or drugs

The decision is made with a psychiatrist after a proper assessment, and the reasons are explained to the patient and family.

In an emergency: if someone is in immediate danger or talking about ending their life, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. For free, 24/7 mental-health support in many Indian languages, call Tele-MANAS on 14416.

What a day in inpatient care looks like

Every day follows a structure, which the team explains at admission so that patients and families know what to expect. A typical day brings together:

  • Morning check-in: nursing staff check how the night went, take vital signs and give medicines as prescribed.
  • Psychiatrist review: regular reviews, more often in the first days and during detox, to adjust treatment.
  • Individual therapy: sessions with a psychologist, for example CBT or motivation-enhancement work for addiction.
  • Group sessions: recovery support and psychoeducation with others going through similar experiences.
  • Family sessions: on scheduled days and with the patient's consent, so the family understands the illness and the plan.
  • Meals, rest and activities that rebuild a healthy routine, sleep and appetite.
  • Evening wind-down: medicines, a regular sleep routine and staff available through the night.

The exact timetable, visiting arrangements and what to bring are shared before admission.

How long is a stay?

Reason for admissionTypical length
Crisis stabilisation (for example severe depression or acute psychosis)A few days to around two weeks
Alcohol or drug detoxPhysical withdrawal usually settles within about a week; detox stays are commonly 7–10 days
Residential de-addiction or psychiatric rehabilitationCommonly a few weeks to around three months, depending on progress

These are general ranges. Your psychiatrist recommends a length after assessment, reviews it regularly and starts planning discharge from the first week, so that treatment continues smoothly at home.

Fees for inpatient care

Inpatient fees depend on the type of room, the length of stay and the medical care needed, for example supervised detox or extra nursing. After the assessment we give you a written estimate before admission, so there are no surprises.

For context, residential care across the Delhi NCR commonly ranges from about ₹25,000 to over ₹1,00,000 per month. A first consultation with one of our psychiatrists costs ₹1,200 to ₹2,500. See also de-addiction treatment cost in Noida.

Under India's Mental Healthcare Act 2017, insurers must provide cover for mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. Check your policy for psychiatric hospitalisation, and ask our team which bills and documents you will need for a claim.

Admission, consent and your rights

Most admissions are voluntary: the person agrees to come in. The Mental Healthcare Act 2017 protects the right of adults to make decisions about their own treatment. When someone lacks the capacity to decide and is at risk, the Act sets out a supported-admission process with safeguards and regular review. We will explain honestly what is and is not possible in your situation.

  • An ID document and any health insurance details

We will share the full list, including items that are not allowed for safety reasons.

How patients are kept safe

  • A full assessment on admission, including physical health and any risk to safety, reviewed regularly during the stay
  • Medicines given by nursing staff as prescribed, with the psychiatrist reviewing their effect and side effects
  • An environment free of alcohol and drugs, with staff on duty around the clock
  • Families kept informed, with the patient's consent, and told how to raise any concern at any time

What families can do during the stay

  • Take part in family sessions; understanding the illness is one of the strongest supports for recovery
  • Prepare the home for discharge: remove alcohol, keep medicines locked and agree on a daily routine
  • Keep visits calm and encouraging; avoid arguments about the past during the early days
  • Look after yourselves too; caring for someone through a mental health crisis is exhausting

Questions to ask before admission

  • Who leads the care, and how often will a psychiatrist review the patient?
  • Which therapies are included, and how often are sessions?
  • How will the family be involved, and how will we receive updates?
  • What does the written estimate include, and what could add to it?
  • What is the plan for discharge, follow-up and relapse prevention?

We are happy to answer all of these before any decision is made. Call +91 72669 93399 at any time, including nights and weekends.

The first month after discharge

Week one

A follow-up appointment is usually booked within the first week. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and keep the discharge summary handy for any doctor you see.

Weeks two to four

Therapy continues, in the clinic or online. Families watch for early warning signs agreed in the relapse-prevention plan, such as poor sleep, withdrawal from others or skipped medicines.

If things get harder

Call the team early rather than waiting for the next appointment. Small adjustments made quickly often prevent a readmission. In an emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital.
