What counts as an emergency

• Talk of suicide, a suicide attempt, or self-harm.
• Seizures, severe confusion, hallucinations or delirium during withdrawal.
• Aggression or violence that is putting the person or others at risk.
• A sudden and severe change in behaviour — not sleeping for days, losing touch with reality, or being unable to care for themselves.
• An overdose, or the suspicion of one — that is an ambulance call, not a rehab call.

What to do in the next few minutes

• Stay with the person, and stay calm — arguing about the past rarely helps in a crisis.
• Remove immediate means of harm if you can do so safely.
• Gather what you know: what was taken and when, current medication, any previous psychiatric history. The clinical team will ask.

What happens when you call

You will be asked a short set of questions designed to work out how urgent this is and what kind of help is appropriate. That triage matters — some situations need an emergency department and an ambulance rather than a psychiatric admission, and we will tell you if that is the case.

If urgent assessment is appropriate, the team will tell you what to bring and what will happen when you arrive.

A note on honesty

Families often soften the details out of shame or fear of judgement. Please do not. The clinical decisions depend on accurate information, and there is nothing you can say that this team has not heard before.
