The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 established that people with mental illness are entitled to treatment on the same footing as people with physical illness, and that includes how insurance treats them. The insurance regulator has since required insurers to provide cover for mental illness.
That is the principle. The practice still depends on the wording of the individual policy — which is why it is worth reading the document rather than assuming.
A cashless claim is settled between the insurer and the hospital, which means less money out of your pocket at admission — but it requires pre-authorisation and the hospital being in-network.
Reimbursement means you pay first and claim afterwards, keeping every bill, prescription and discharge summary. It is slower, but it is not conditional on the network.
Tell us which insurer and policy you hold when you call, and ask what documentation will be needed. Getting the paperwork right before admission avoids a great deal of stress later.
