How Long Does Treatment Take?

Families usually ask this in the hope of a short answer. The honest version is that detox is the quickest part and the least decisive, and that the length that matters is the one after it.

Talk to us before you decide anything

Booking takes a minute. Share your name and number and a member of our clinical team calls you back — usually within the hour — to understand what you are going through and answer your questions before you commit to anything.

Your first consultation is a private conversation, not a commitment to admission. We listen, assess, and explain the options honestly — outpatient sessions, therapy, medication review, or inpatient care where it is genuinely needed.

We see patients at our Sector 117, Noida centre, and online consultations are available if travelling is difficult. Everything you tell us stays confidential.

The three phases, and how long each takes

  • Stabilisation and detox. Days to a couple of weeks. The goal is to get through withdrawal safely. This is the part people imagine when they picture rehab, and it is the part that does least to prevent relapse.
  • Active treatment. Weeks. This is where the therapy happens — understanding what the substance was doing for the person, treating any underlying depression, anxiety or trauma, and building the skills to cope without it.
  • Aftercare. Months, tapering in intensity. Continued review, therapy and support during the period when relapse risk is highest.

Why the same substance gives different answers

Two people using the same substance can need very different programmes. What changes the answer: how long it has been going on, how much is being used, whether there have been previous attempts, whether there is a co-occurring psychiatric illness, physical health, and how stable and supportive home is.

This is why an assessment comes before a plan, and why a centre that quotes a fixed duration before meeting the person is not really answering the question.

The short-stay trap

A very short admission that covers detox but not the treatment that follows tends to end in relapse — and a second admission costs more than completing the first one would have. When you compare programmes, compare what is delivered, not just the number of days.

Frequently asked questions

How long does detox take?
Medically supervised withdrawal commonly takes several days to a week or two depending on the substance, the quantity and the person’s physical health. Detox on its own is stabilisation, not treatment.
How long is inpatient rehabilitation?
Structured inpatient programmes are usually measured in weeks rather than days. The right length depends on the severity, on whether there is a co-occurring psychiatric condition, and on what the person is going home to.
Can someone leave early?
An adult receiving treatment voluntarily can generally choose to leave. It is worth discussing in advance what happens if that moment comes, because it often does around the point where things start to feel better.
When does aftercare end?
Recovery is not a fixed-length course. Most people benefit from some form of continuing support well beyond discharge — outpatient review, therapy, or group support.
