About this test
The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised covers six clusters: washing, checking, ordering, obsessing, hoarding and mental neutralising. Each item asks how much that experience has distressed you in the past month, scored 0 to 4, giving a total out of 72.
OCD is widely misunderstood as tidiness. Clinically it is a cycle: an intrusive thought that causes intense anxiety, and a behaviour or mental ritual that briefly relieves it. The relief is what keeps the cycle running.
A score of 21 or above is the commonly used cut-off suggesting OCD may be present. Importantly, OCD responds well to a specific therapy β exposure and response prevention β which is different from general talking therapy.
What your score means
| Score | Result | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| 21+ | At or above the OCD cut-off | A level at which a proper assessment is recommended. |
| 0β20 | Below the OCD cut-off | Below the usual threshold, though distressing symptoms still deserve attention. |
