Free Alcohol & Drug Use Test (CAGE-AID)

Four questions, under a minute, completely confidential. The CAGE-AID is the short screener clinicians use to decide whether alcohol or drug use is worth a proper conversation.

These screenings are for awareness only and are not a diagnosis. If you are in crisis or thinking of harming yourself, please call your local emergency number or a mental-health helpline immediately, or visit the nearest hospital.

About this test

CAGE-AID stands for the CAGE questionnaire Adapted to Include Drugs. The four questions ask whether you have felt you should Cut down, been Annoyed by criticism of your use, felt Guilty about it, or needed it as an Eye-opener to steady yourself in the morning.

Notice that none of the questions ask how much you drink or use. That is deliberate. Quantity is a poor guide; the relationship between you and the substance is the better one.

Two or more yes answers is the usual point at which further assessment is recommended. One yes is still worth thinking about honestly.

If you are answering these on behalf of someone else in your head, that is a common and reasonable reason to call us.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am an alcoholic?
No. It means your relationship with alcohol or drugs is worth a conversation with someone who does this professionally. Most people who screen positive are not physically dependent.
Is stopping on my own safe?
Not always. Withdrawal from alcohol and from sedatives can cause seizures and can be dangerous. If you drink daily and heavily, get medical advice before stopping abruptly.
Will anyone find out that I took this?
No. It is confidential, and our team treats every enquiry the same way.
I am worried about a family member, not myself. What can I do?
Speak to us directly. Families can consult a clinician about how to approach someone who is not yet ready to seek help.

Next steps

A screening result is a starting point, not a verdict. If your result concerns you — or if it looks fine but you still do not feel right — a conversation with a clinician costs you nothing and takes twenty minutes. De-addiction treatment at SSHIMOH.
